Life Safety Code & Emergency Preparedness: Your January Compliance Checklist

Life Safety Code (LSC) and Emergency Preparedness (EP) requirements are often overlooked until survey time — and that’s when issues surface. January is the right time to review your systems and ensure everything is up to date.

Key actions include:

  • Reviewing annual drills and exercises
  • Updating risk assessments
  • Ensuring documentation is complete and accessible
  • Verifying that staff understand their roles during emergencies
  • Conducting environmental rounds to identify LSC risks

A proactive approach reduces citations and strengthens resident safety. Day 9 of the 12 Days of Compliance is all about reminding you that while you may not get points on survey from a K-tag or an E-tag, that doesn’t mean you should ignore issues until someone else identifies them.
