OIG is Auditing Nursing Home Drug Overdoses

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) added a new item to its Work Plan, “Audit of Nursing Facility Drug Overdoses.” The report, with an expected issue date of FY 2025, will review if selected nursing facilities complied with quality-of-care regulatory requirements and reported and investigated drug overdoses appropriately. The audit will also determine if nursing homes implemented corrective actions related to potential illegal drug usage (spoiler alert: we are thinking not enough) and took appropriate corrective actions when an opioid overdose occurred as the result of a significant pain medication error.
