OIG to audit MDS accuracy related to a high-risk area in upcoming report

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) added another nursing facility-focused item to its Work Plan in March 2024, “Assessing the Accuracy of Nursing Home Falls Reporting in MDS Assessments.” OIG will be reviewing Medicare claims data to identify hospitalizations related to a fall with major injury and then compare that data to MDS assessments to determine the extent to which providers accurately reported these falls. The report will also include characteristics of nursing homes that did not report falls appropriately as well as the characteristics of the nursing home residents whose falls were not reported accurately in the MDS. This report has an expected issue date of FY 2025.
