CDC Recommends Enhanced Barrier Precautions in Nursing Homes

The Centers for Disease Control (CDC) updated recommendations for the use of Enhanced Barrier Precautions (EBP) in nursing homes on July 12, 2022. On today’s National Nursing Home Stakeholder call, the CDC presented an overview of why it is making these recommendations, and the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) noted that at this time, these recommendations are only that – not regulations.

According to the CDC, more than 50% of residents may be colonized with Multidrug-resistant Organisms (MRDOs). MDRO transmission is common is skilled nursing facilities, so enhanced infection control may help reduce the transmission of these organisms.
