Most cited nursing home health deficiencies 2005-2014

The newly released Nursing Home Data Compendium 2015 provides the list of most highly cited health deficiencies in nursing homes for the period of 2005-2014. The list is full of “gotcha” tags that can be highly cited:

  1. F-371 Food Procurement, Store/Prepare/Serve – Sanitary (Average ranking 1.8)
  2. F-323 Free of Accident Hazards/Supervision/Devices (Average ranking 2.4)
  3. F-309 Provide Care/Services for Highest Well Being (Average ranking 3.6)
  4. F-441 Infection Control, Prevent Spread, Linens (Average ranking 4.6)
  5. F-279 Develop Comprehensive Care Plans (Average ranking 5.8)
  6. F-281 Services Provided Meet Professional Standards (Average ranking 6.1)
  7. F-329 Drug Regiment is Free of Unnecessary Drugs (Average ranking 8.3)
  8. F-253 Housekeeping and Maintenance Services  (Average ranking 8.8)
  9. F-241 Dignity and Respect of Individuality (Average ranking 10)
  10. F-514 Resident Records – Complete/Accurate/Accessible (Average ranking 10)
  11. F-314 Treatment/Svcs to Prevent/Heal Pressure Ulcers (Average ranking 11.1)
  12. F-315 No Catheter, Prevent UTI, Restore Bladder (Average ranking 11.7)
  13. F-282 Services By Qualified Persons/Per Care Plan (Average ranking 13.1)
  14. F-431 Drug Records, Label/Store Drugs & Biologicals (Average ranking 13.9)
  15. F-324 Supervision (Average ranking 12.7* – excludes 2009-2014 when the citation was not used)

The release of the Nursing Home Data Compendium was announced in a March 25, 2016 CMS S&C Letter. The letter outlines the contents of the report, which includes three major sections of data:

  • Section 1 – Nursing Home Characteristics
  • Section 2 – Nursing Home Survey Results
  • Section 3 – Nursing Home Resident Demographics, Functional Characteristics and Clinical Characteristics
