OIG to look at potential abuse and neglect in new report

The Office of the Inspector General (OIG) added a new report to its Workplan in January with an expected issue date of FY2018. The OIG plans to determine the prevalence of potential abuse or neglect of Medicare beneficiaries in in-patient and out-patient settings as well as determining whether the potential for abuse or neglect occurred at a medical facility or another location, including the person’s home. The updated Requirements of Participation for nursing facilities have great expanded on the prevention of abuse and neglect as part of the Elder Justice Act’s requirement that older people have the right to be free from abuse, neglect and exploitation.
