Special Focus Facility List updated for first time since February 2020

On July 29, 2020, The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) updated the Special Focus Facility (SFF) List for the first time since the February 2020 update. With the COVID-19 pandemic underway after that, CMS had limited its scope of survey activity to ensure targeted infection control surveys were completed at every facility in the United States. State Agencies were tasked with completing these surveys by the end of July in order to receive CARES Act funding available through September 2023. Additionally, updates were made to Nursing Home Compare on July 29, 2020 and include some star ratings being held constant per a June CMS QSO Memo, but providers should be aware that this all indicates a return to “normal” survey and certification activities by CMS.

Most states have completed their targeted surveys per the most recent CMS data, so it is time to start thinking about compliance beyond COVID-19 and infection control. COVID-19 and infection control are going to remain a priority focus during upcoming surveys as well as how well you are doing with your abuse prevention program and other high risk areas.
