CMS to Restructure Quality Improvement Organizations (QIOs)

The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) issued a press release on Friday outline the details of the launch of its improved Quality Improvement Program. CMS is looking to adapt the QIO program to make it more efficient, eliminate perceived conflicts of interest and better address the needs of Medicare beneficiaries.

The first phase includes case review to ensure consistency in the review process and monitoring activities of the program, which will be overseen by two QIO contractors, Livanta LLC and KePRO. The second phase of the program is expected to begin in July. CMS will be awarding contracts to organizations to work directly with providers/communities on data-driven quality initiatives.
