The Center for Disease Control and Prevention issued a report, “Antibiotic Resistance Threats in the United States, 2013” which examines the growing issues around antibiotic-resistant bacteria. The CDC estimates that over two million people in the United States become sickened with antibiotic resistant infections and more than 23,300 of them die as a result.
The potential consequences of antibiotic resistant illnesses is so worrisome that the CDC created a system to categorize bacteria into three categories – urgent, serious and concerning.
