CMS announces 6 new Quality Measures for Nursing Home Compare

CMS announced the addition of six new Quality Measures that will be added to Nursing Home Compare in an Open Door Forum call today. The new Quality Measures will be publicly available on Nursing Home Compare beginning April 2016. In July 2016, CMS will begin the process of incorporating five of the six measures into the Five Star Quality Rating for nursing homes, with the process ending in January 2017.

The new Quality Measures include:

1.      Percentage of short-stay residents who were successfully discharged to the community (Medicare claims-based)

2.      Percentage of short-stay residents who have had an outpatient ER visit (Medicare claims-based)

3.      Percentage of short-stay residents who were re-hospitalized after a nursing home admission (Medicare claims-based)

4.      Percentage of short-stay residents who made improvements in function (MDS-based)

5.      Percentage of long-stay residents whose ability to move independently worsened (MDS-based)

6.      Percentage of long-stay residents who received an antianxiety or hypnotic medication (MDS-based)

The new QM for residents who received an antianxiety or hypnotic medication will not be incorporated into the Five Star Quality Rating additions at this time.
