Texas Begins Focused Dementia Care Surveys in May

In 2014, CMS announced that it was piloting two new survey types, including a focused dementia care survey. Texas DADs announced that it will be implementing these surveys beginning in May as a stand-alone survey type which will not be attached to a standard or complaint survey.

As part of its changes to Nursing Home Compare 3.0, CMS had announced that this focused survey type would be rolled out for a sample of nursing homes, but the survey format was not released. The DADs note provides some information on the format of the survey, but this may not be the final format:

  • Survey will focus on the process for prescribing antipsychotic medications in nursing homes and will assess compliance with regulations related to dementia care practices
  • Surveys will take 1.5-2 days
  • If non-compliance is found, a 2567 will be used, a Statement of Deficiencies will be provided and a Plan of Correction will be required
  • The standard enforcement process and time frames for survey will be used for these special surveys
