MedPAC report finds no improvements to SNF reimbursement

A new MedPAC report has found that Medicare reimbursements for skilled nursing facilities have actually deteriorated under changes made by CMS in the years 2006-2014. The report, “The Need to Reform Medicare’s Payments to Skilled Nursing Facilities is as Strong as Ever,” notes that in 2014, Medicare payments for SNF services were estimated to be in excess of $31 billion. The study reviews SNF payments and costs to identify whether more reform is needed, and reviews current policies to alternatives that could increase payment accuracy and reduce incentives to provide more therapy hours that may not be needed.
