In April, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) adjusted the number of required slots and candidates for the Special Focus Facilities program. CMS created a list of SFF slots available for each state, and States have until July 31, 2014 to designate facilities in their area, but many have already started selecting facilities. Based on this CMS letter and the most recent Special Focus Facility List (6/19/14), within the next month, more than thirty facilities across the country will be alerted that they are being placed in this program. Since this initiative is likely to affect a number of facilities, it seemed like a good time to explain what the SFF program is all about, the general profile of these designated facilities, key deficiencies and related systems.
