Letter: Compliance with Life Safety Code in End Stage Renal Disease Facilities

In a July 12, 2013 Survey & Certification letter (Ref: S&C: 13-47-LSC/ESRD), “Compliance with Life Safety Code (LSC) and End Stage Renal Disease (ESRD) Facilities,” the Centers for Medicare & Medicare Services (CMS) noted that the requirements of the 2000 edition of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) Life Safety Code 101 are limited to certain ESRD facilities. These facilities include those facilities that provide one or more exits at grade level from the patient treatment level (including an ADA compliant accessibility ramp) and those that do not share a common wall/floor/ceiling with an “industrial high hazardous” occupancy.

The letter outlines these specific exemptions and provides a sample letter of exemption for providers to follow. Read the letter on the CMS website.
